U9 and U12 Hammerhead Teams Win at 2009 Savannah Recreational Cup

U9 Hammerheads U12 Hammerheads

The Columbia United YMCA Hammerheads from Lexington recently visited the Savannah Recreational Cup and both the U9 and U12 teams came home as champions!

The U9 were forced to play in a U10 age group so expectations were mixed going into the first game.  Their first game was against the CGSA Tornadoes, who are the Savannah City Champions and have been unbeaten in 3 years.  The size and speed of the opposition was daunting in the first few minutes and by the end of the game the U9 Hammerheads fought out an amazing 2-2 tie. The Hammerheads played their next two games giving up only one goal and found themselves in the U10 Silver Division final.  The Hammerheads prevailed to bring home the Championship.

The U12 faced a tough road as they were placed in the upper U12 bracket with several "all-star" teams from several SC and GA clubs. The Hammerheads came out strong winning there first 2 games and putting themselves in the drivers seat for the Sunday morning matchup against unbeaten Hampton Varnville.  Many of the Hammerheads players felt strongly about sporting Mohawks for the matchup and the team unity showed as the Hammerheads came out on top.  In the final against the Savannah Celtic the winds howled, the rain poured and mud muddied but five beautiful first half goals sealed the championship for the U12 Hammerheads making this a very successful visit to the state of GA.

Unfortunately Coach Looker had promised to sport the Mohawk if the teams were successful.
