History of the Airport Select Invitational

The Airport Select Invitational was established in 2010 as an opportunity to join teams from all around South Carolina, no matter the classification. ASI 2010 was host to the largest regular season tournament in the state with 18 teams participating. In its first year, ASI was blessed with beautiful weather and strong play as Coach Jason Mueller’s North Myrtle Beach Chiefs were crowned ASI’s first ever champion with a thrilling win in Penalty Kicks over Fort Mill’s Nation Ford Falcons. The 2011 ASI Final featured both a rematch of the 2010 SCISA AAA state finals and a preview of the 2011 finals, seeing Cardinal Newman defeat rival Pinewood Prep 1-0.  In 2012, beach rivals Socastee and Myrtle Beach battled into overtime with Myrtle Beach being the eventual winner 2-1. 2013-2015 all featured local rivals Dutch Fork and Cardinal Newman. In 2013, Cardinal Newman scored in overtime to defeat Dutch Fork 3-2. In 2014, Dutch  Fork defeated Cardinal Newman by the same score. In 2015, the Cardinals defeated the Silver Foxes 1-0.

ASI brings schools from all classifications together for friendly competition and camaraderie. “Our main goal is for everyone to be able to come to a high school tournament, enjoy the field top to bottom, and leave satisfied no matter the result,” states Airport Head Coach Sam Masone.

The Invitational’s popularity is rapidly growing in the state and the tournament plans to continue to expand and upgrade in the coming years.  The City of Cayce and Lexington School District 2 have embraced the ASI tournament and has taken steps to upgrade the facilities for this year's tournament.
