South Carolina United FC

Columbia United FC 2006 PMSL State Champs!

U16 Elite Girls and U16 Challenge Boys take the crown

U16 Challenge Boys became the first ever State Champions for Columbia United FC.  The President’s Medal Soccer League State finals were held November 11 and 12 in Summerville and James Island. The Columbia United 16 Challenge Boys team is a prime example of the successful merger between CSC and NESCA.  Coach Wayne Quinlan took a group of boys and made them a team.  Under his leadership, the team took the State finals with a win over the Discoveries White in an exciting 4-3 double overtime.  This win qualifies them to represent South Carolina in the Regionals in Tampa Florida in June 2007.

Congratulations to Coach Dick Hiller and his U16 Elite Girls team who were crowned State Champions on Sunday afternoon in Summerville following their 1-0 victory of CESA Girls U-16 Premier.  It was an extremely hard fought match between two very talented teams. Deadlocked at 0-0 most of the match, Columbia United went up 1-0 on a second half goal by Haley Hutchins which in the end proved to be the game winner!  Fittingly, at the the awards ceremony while holding the championship trophy high, the team paid tribute to their fallen but not forgotten teammate, Ashley Dent, with their collective pre-game and post-game cheer "Ash".

With the victory, our U16 Girls Elite team will represent South Carolina at the USYSA Region III Regional Tournament in Oklahoma in June.  Congratulations girls on a wonderful season and lessons well lived!

In other State Championship matches, our U15 and U18 Elite Girls teams were defeated by CESA Premier teams from Greenville and our U17 Boys Elite team fell to Lexington County Soccer Club 1-0 in another great youth soccer match.   In consolation play, our U15 Boys Elite team beat CESA Challenge to take third place.  having so reached the finals, our U15 Girls Elite, U16 Girls Elite and U17 Boys Elite team have qualified to play in the Region III Premier League for 2007.
In all, to recap State Challenge Cup play, Columbia United FC had 13 of its 15 teams qualify for the tournament.  Of the 13 that qualified, 6 advanced to the Final Four weekend, of those 6 teams, four advanced to the Championship match in their respective age groups resulting in 1 State Champion, 3 Runners-Up and 1 Third place finish!

Columbia United FC expresses its congratulations to fellow MidState clubs, Lexington County Soccer Club and Discoveries Soccer Club for their State Championships at the U17 and U16 boys age groups, respectively.  And of course, to all other teams across the state which shared similar success.  Indeed, it was a great weekend for youth soccer.  SCYSA ran a wonderful tournament as did host club Summerville Soccer Club.  Thank you to all for making high quality youth soccer available for our players and their families.
